The incident occurred when the cargo vessel was departing the Ukrainian port of Odesa. According to reports, the missile attack claimed at least 10 lives, including four Indian crew members, prompting strong concern from New Delhi.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian officials are in communication with their Indian counterparts after the tragedy. His remarks came shortly after India summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires to seek clarification over the incident.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo ship Golden Leo was struck by three cruise missiles while sailing in the Black Sea. Ukraine has alleged that the attack was carried out by Russian forces. The vessel reportedly had a multinational crew, including sailors from India and Syria.
The deaths of the Indian nationals have drawn attention to the continuing risks faced by civilian maritime workers operating in conflict-affected regions. Indian authorities are monitoring the situation and are expected to remain in contact with Russian officials regarding the incident.
