New Delhi, June 2: The Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education has opened applications for the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026, a major national initiative aimed at bringing distinguished Indian-origin researchers, scientists, technologists, and industry experts from across the world to contribute to India’s growing research and innovation ecosystem.
The scheme seeks to strengthen India’s scientific and technological capabilities by connecting globally accomplished Indian talent with leading higher education institutions, research laboratories, and innovation centres in the country. It focuses on promoting impactful research in sectors considered critical for India’s future development.
The PMRC Scheme covers 13 priority areas, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, climate and sustainability, cybersecurity, healthcare technologies, biotechnology, advanced materials, space and defence technologies, next-generation communications, advanced manufacturing, agricultural innovation, blue economy, and atomic energy.
Designed around three key components—Lead Institutions, Host Institutions, and PMRC Fellows—the programme aims to support mission-driven and nationally relevant research projects. Selection of participating institutions and fellows will be carried out through a rigorous evaluation process overseen by an Empowered Committee headed by the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India.
Selected PMRC Fellows will receive fellowship support, research grants, access to advanced laboratories, and opportunities to collaborate with some of India’s top government research and academic institutions.
The initiative offers three categories of participation: Young Research Fellows for early-career researchers, Senior Research Fellows for experienced professionals, and Research Chairs for internationally recognized research leaders.
The scheme is open to accomplished Indian-origin researchers and professionals, including Indian citizens working overseas, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders, and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), who have demonstrated excellence in research, innovation, and technology.
Eligible host institutions include top-ranked government higher educational institutions, national laboratories, and premier research organizations operating under agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
To facilitate implementation across various thematic areas, seven premier institutions have been designated as lead institutions:
Applications from eligible fellows and host institutions are being accepted through the PMRC portal from June 1, 2026.
The government said the initiative is expected to accelerate research excellence, foster international collaboration, and contribute significantly to India’s vision of becoming a self-reliant and innovation-driven nation under the goal of a Viksit Bharat.
