Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Celebrates 84 Years with National Symposium on Its Role and Future

New Delhi, October 8, 2025: The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), one of India’s premier quasi-judicial bodies, marked its 84th anniversary with a national symposium titled “Income Tax Appellate Tribunal – Role, Challenges, and Way Forward” at the Delhi High Court Auditorium.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, congratulated ITAT on its decades-long service since 1941. He highlighted the Tribunal’s significant contribution to India achieving the fourth-largest economy and emphasized its role in delivering justice to over 30 lakh appellants.  Meghwal also praised the ongoing evolution of ITAT in keeping pace with changing times and acknowledged the presence of the nation’s distinguished legal community at the event.

Chief Justice of India, Hon’ble Justice B.R. Gavai, expressed gratitude to the legal fraternity and shared insights from his extensive experience, reflecting on ITAT’s crucial role in modern times.

Dr. Anju Rathi Rana, Law Secretary, Department of Legal Affairs, noted that ITAT stands as a symbol of fairness and reasoned adjudication. She highlighted the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline and spoke on ITAT’s ongoing modernization and capacity-building initiatives.

The symposium featured notable addresses by Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, along with eminent jurists, government officials, legal professionals, and students. Discussions focused on ITAT’s legacy, landmark rulings, and strategies to strengthen its tax dispute resolution framework.

The program began with a traditional Lighting of the Lamp, symbolizing knowledge and equity. Justice (Retd.) C.V. Bhadang, President of ITAT, welcomed attendees and reiterated the Tribunal’s commitment to upholding the rule of law in taxation matters. An audio-visual presentation, “84 Glorious Years of ITAT,” showcased the Tribunal’s journey, its landmark decisions, and its role in timely and fair justice delivery.

Ajay Wadhwa, President of the ITAT Tax Bar Association (New Delhi), emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Bar and the Bench in strengthening ITAT. A highlight of the event was the felicitation of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai by the Union Minister of Law & Justice, recognizing his exceptional contribution to the judiciary.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Mahavir Singh, Vice-President (Delhi Zone), ITAT, followed by the National Anthem, a group photograph, and dinner. The symposium underscored the strong collaboration among the judiciary, executive, and legal fraternity in reinforcing transparency, efficiency, and integrity in India’s tax adjudication system.
