The Vikram-1 successful launch has marked a major milestone for India’s space sector, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi praising the achievement as a proud moment for the nation. He highlighted the role of young innovators and private companies in expanding India’s presence in space technology.
Speaking during the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said the successful mission has created a sense of pride among citizens and highlighted the expanding contribution of private companies to India’s space sector.
PM Modi praised the efforts of young engineers and entrepreneurs involved in developing the rocket, stating that their dedication, technical expertise and determination have opened a new chapter in India’s space journey.
The Vikram-1 mission, developed by Hyderabad-based private space startup Skyroot Aerospace, successfully completed its first test flight on July 18. The launch took place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota under the mission name ‘Aagaman’.
The rocket demonstrated its key capabilities during the flight, including successful stage separation and the operation of its Orbital Adjustment Module (OAM), before placing payloads into a low Earth orbit of around 450 kilometres.
Standing at nearly 24 metres, Vikram-1 is built using advanced carbon-composite technology and is designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kg into Low Earth Orbit. The rocket uses a combination of solid propulsion stages along with a liquid-powered orbital module.
The Prime Minister said the achievement represents the growing strength of India’s private space ecosystem and reflects the country’s commitment to encouraging innovation among young entrepreneurs.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders and several Chief Ministers participated in the nationwide listening of Mann Ki Baat. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and BJP president Nitin Nabin attended the programme in Patna, while Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai joined from Raipur. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also listened to the address from their respective states.
The successful Vikram-1 mission is being seen as a significant step towards strengthening India’s role in the global commercial space industry and encouraging more private participation in space exploration.
