Raghav Chadha Raises Alarm in Rajya Sabha Over Exploitation by Health Insurance Companies and Private Hospitals

AAP MP demands urgent reforms, time-bound claim settlements, and calls for health insurance to be a guaranteed support, not a gamble

New Delhi: Raising a critical issue in the Rajya Sabha, AAP MP Raghav Chadha, also National Spokesperson of Aam Aadmi Party party, on Wednesday exposed the widespread exploitation of ordinary Indian families by health insurance companies and private hospitals. Highlighting the everyday struggles faced by citizens, MP Raghav Chadha pointed out how cashless treatment is frequently denied, claims are arbitrarily rejected, and patients are forced to spend months following up for reimbursements, often while battling serious illnesses. “Some patients even lose their lives while submitting claims, highlighting the severe human cost of this exploitation,” he said. Raghav Chadha stressed that health insurance, meant to provide financial security, should not operate like a gamble but as a guaranteed support system. He highlighted the growing nexus between insurance companies and private hospitals, which leads to unnecessary delays, manipulates claim approvals, and leaves the common man powerless despite paying premiums in good faith every year. “Every year, millions of Indians purchase health insurance believing it will provide timely help during emergencies, but they end up trapped in bureaucratic delays and disputes between insurers and hospitals,” he added. He cited examples of families being forced to repeatedly submit documents, fill forms, and endure months-long follow-ups, sometimes leading to severe financial strain or even loss of life. Raghav Chadha warned that unchecked, this system turns a tool of financial security into a mechanism for exploitation, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income families. Calling for urgent reforms, Raghav Chadha appealed to the government to introduce strict, time-bound procedures for claim settlements, enforce accountability, and ensure transparency in the insurance process. He emphasized that the power imbalance between insurance companies, private hospitals, and patients must end, and health insurance must function as a reliable guarantee, not a risk. His intervention in Parliament has sparked discussions on strengthening consumer protection laws in the health insurance sector, safeguarding the rights of millions of policyholders, and ensuring that citizens can access timely medical care without unnecessary hurdles or fear of financial exploitation.
