India’s first solar mission, the Aditya-L1 spacecraft, has successfully completed its first halo orbit around the Sun-Earth Lagrangian Point 1 (L1). The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) confirmed that a station-keeping manoeuvre ensured the spacecraft’s seamless transition into the second halo orbit.

Launched on September 2, 2023, Aditya-L1 was inserted into its targeted halo orbit on January 6, 2024. The spacecraft takes 178 days to complete one revolution around the L1 point. During this period, it will encounter various perturbing forces that may cause it to deviate from its intended path. ISRO has explained that the journey around the L1 point involves modeling complex dynamics to manage these perturbations.
