India Post Payments Bank Unveils Aadhaar-Based Face Authentication for Contactless Digital Banking

IPPB’s face authentication system empowers elderly and differently-abled citizens with a contactless, dignified way to access banking services.

New Delhi- India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has launched an Aadhaar-based Face Authentication service to simplify and secure customer transactions, marking a significant step toward inclusive digital banking in India. This AI-powered facial verification system allows users to authenticate their identity without the need for fingerprints or one-time passwords (OTPs), a boon for senior citizens and differently-abled users.

This breakthrough feature is built within the framework of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and supports the government’s vision of “Digital India” and financial inclusion for all. Customers can now perform key banking operations—like opening accounts, transferring funds, and checking balances—just by showing their face to the mobile camera of a postal banking agent.

Speaking at the launch, IPPB MD & CEO R. Viswesvaran said, “We are not just improving technology; we are enhancing dignity. With this face authentication facility, we ensure no citizen is excluded from essential banking services due to fingerprint issues or mobile OTP constraints.”

The technology is designed especially for those who struggle with traditional biometric systems—such as the elderly, people with worn-out fingerprints, or those living in remote areas with connectivity issues.

Key Benefits of the New Face Authentication Feature

OTP & Fingerprint-Free Transactions: No device or SMS needed

Enhanced Accessibility: Ideal for elderly & differently-abled users

Secure and Contactless: Reduces physical contact during health emergencies

Fast Processing: Speeds up services like account setup, fund transfers, bill payments

Available Nationwide: Integrated across IPPB’s 1.65 lakh post office network

Launched in 2018 under the Department of Posts, IPPB aims to bring banking to the doorsteps of every Indian. With a postal network covering over 5.5 lakh villages and towns and a workforce of 3 lakh postal employees, the bank serves over 11 crore customers using intuitive mobile technology in 13 regional languages.

IPPB’s latest move aligns perfectly with its mandate to make banking paperless, cashless, presence-less—and now, touchless.

By eliminating the need for traditional biometric devices and mobile OTPs, IPPB’s Aadhaar-based face authentication adds a new dimension to accessible and secure digital banking. It ensures that financial services reach even the most marginalized communities with ease and dignity.
