Guwahati August 25 2024 : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that two Bangladeshi nationals who had illegally entered India were detected and promptly sent back to their country. The individuals, identified as Masum Khan and Sonia Akhtar, were apprehended by Assam Police at Badarpur railway station and returned to Bangladesh on Friday night. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma detailed the operation, stating that the two individuals had entered India via the Madhoppur-Agartala route and were heading to Bengaluru. Masum Khan is reportedly a resident of an area under the Modelganj police station in Bangladesh, while Sonia Akhtar hails from Dhaka.
Sarma credited the successful operation to the collaboration between the Assam Police and the Border Security Force (BSF), who worked together to push the apprehended individuals back across the border. The chief minister highlighted the efficiency and effectiveness of the law enforcement agencies in addressing the issue of illegal entry. This incident is part of a broader effort by the Assam government to curb illegal immigration from Bangladesh. According to Sarma, over 30 Bangladeshi nationals attempting to enter India without proper documentation have been intercepted and sent back in the past month alone. These individuals were reportedly traveling to South Indian cities like Bengaluru in search of employment, particularly in the textile industry.
Sarma’s strong stance on illegal immigration reflects ongoing concerns in Assam over cross-border infiltration, which has long been a contentious issue in the region. The state shares a significant border with Bangladesh, making it a frequent point of entry for illegal immigrants seeking economic opportunities in India.
The chief minister’s announcement underscores Assam’s commitment to maintaining strict border security and ensuring that any unauthorized entrants are swiftly dealt with. The recent operations by Assam Police, in collaboration with the BSF, demonstrate the state’s proactive measures in addressing the challenges posed by illegal immigration. As Assam continues to tackle this issue, Sarma’s administration is likely to intensify efforts to safeguard the state’s borders and prevent further unauthorized entries.
