Mumbai to Launch ₹504 Crore Waste-to-Energy Project by 2025

New Delhi, August 5, 2024: India generated 1,70,339 tons of municipal solid waste daily in 2021-2022, according to a report submitted by 36 States and UTs to the Central Pollution Control Board. Out of this, 1,56,449 tons were collected, 91,511 tons processed or treated, and 41,455 tons landfilled.

In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) handles around 6,400 tons of waste per day. Of this, 5,800 tons are processed at the Kanjurmarg Integrated Waste Management Facility using bio-reactor and composting technologies, while approximately 600 tons are disposed of at the Deonar Dumping Ground. The BMC employs measures such as soil covering, regular fogging for pest control, and ambient air quality monitoring to mitigate environmental impact. Currently, there is no reported increase in diseases around the dumping grounds.

Additionally, BMC is developing a Waste-to-Energy Project with a capacity of 600 tons per day. This project aims to enhance waste management by converting waste into electricity, with an estimated generation of 7 MW. Funded by the 15th Finance Commission under the Grant for Solid Waste Management, the project has a capital cost of about ₹504 Crores and is expected to be operational by October 2025.
