8th Pay Commission to be Established for Central Government Workers and Retirees

New Delhi : The Indian government has officially announced the formation of the 8th Pay Commission for Central government employees and pensioners. The announcement was made by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi, during a media briefing on the Cabinet’s decision. The decision to establish the 8th Pay Commission comes ahead of the conclusion of the 7th Pay Commission’s term, which is set to end in 2026.

Minister Vaishnaw explained that setting up the 8th Pay Commission now would provide ample time to receive its recommendations. He added that the appointment of the Commission’s Chairman and two members would be made soon, signaling the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of its employees.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the move, stating that the decision would improve the quality of life for Central government employees and pensioners, and help boost consumption across the economy. In a social media post, he praised the efforts of government workers, acknowledging their vital role in building a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (developed India).

The announcement of the 8th Pay Commission is expected to benefit over 45 lakh Central government employees and more than 68 lakh pensioners. Leaders of Railway Unions expressed their gratitude, highlighting the positive impact the decision would have on their members.

Shiv Gopal Mishra, General Secretary of the All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF), along with other union leaders, met Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi to thank Prime Minister Modi. Mishra conveyed the appreciation of 40 lakh civilian employees, 29 lakh defense and paramilitary forces personnel, as well as a similar number of pensioners, for the government’s decision.

Guman Singh, President of the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen, also expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and the government for the timely decision.

In addition to the announcement regarding the 8th Pay Commission, the Cabinet also approved the establishment of a Third Launch Pad (TLP) at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The TLP project, which will be constructed at a cost of 3985 crore rupees, is aimed at enhancing the infrastructure for ISRO’s Next Generation Launch Vehicles.
