Supreme Court Postpones Hearing on Arvind Kejriwal’s Plea Against CBI Arrest in Delhi Excise Policy Case

New Delhi : On Friday, the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s petition challenging his potential arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Delhi excise policy case. The case has attracted widespread attention due to the serious allegations of corruption and irregularities related to the now-defunct liquor policy implemented by the Delhi government. The Court has scheduled the next hearing for September 5, allowing more time for both the defense and prosecution to prepare their arguments.

The controversy surrounding the Delhi excise policy began when the policy, which was aimed at increasing government revenue and regulating the sale of alcohol, faced allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety. Critics accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of favoritism and of providing undue benefits to certain private vendors, leading to significant financial losses for the state exchequer. These allegations prompted the CBI to launch an investigation to uncover potential illegal activities and corruption in the implementation of the policy.

As the investigation progressed, several officials, including those closely associated with the Delhi government, were arrested. The CBI’s move to potentially arrest Arvind Kejriwal, who is also the national convenor of the AAP, is seen as a significant escalation in the case. Kejriwal has consistently denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the investigation is politically motivated and an attempt to tarnish his image and discredit his government.

Kejriwal’s legal team has argued that his arrest is unjustified and that he has fully cooperated with the investigation. They contend that the CBI’s actions are an overreach and a misuse of power, aimed at intimidating a democratically elected leader. The petition filed by Kejriwal challenges the legality of the arrest, questioning the CBI’s grounds for detaining him and alleging that the arrest is based on flimsy and unsubstantiated evidence.

The Supreme Court’s decision to adjourn the hearing until September 5 indicates that the justices require more time to review the case details and hear comprehensive arguments from both sides. This delay gives the CBI an opportunity to present further evidence to justify its actions and also allows Kejriwal’s defense team to strengthen their case against what they view as an unwarranted arrest.
