NEP 2020 Gives Students Greater Freedom and Choice in Education, Says Jitendra Singh

New Delhi, June 10: Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Wednesday said that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has transformed India’s education system by giving students greater freedom to pursue subjects and careers based on their interests and abilities.

Speaking at the The Week Education Conclave 2026 in New Delhi, the minister described the policy as one of the most significant reforms introduced during the past decade. He said the new framework has reduced rigid academic structures and encouraged students to make informed choices about their educational journeys.

NEP 2020 Brings Greater Academic Flexibility

According to Singh, the previous education system often pushed students into fixed streams and career paths. He said many learners had limited opportunities to switch disciplines even when their interests changed.

The minister noted that NEP 2020 has introduced flexibility that allows students to explore different subjects and adjust their academic direction. He said this approach enables young people to pursue fields that match their aptitude rather than following predetermined choices.

He added that students are now increasingly exploring emerging disciplines such as biotechnology, alongside traditional areas of study, creating a more diverse and skilled workforce.

Positive Impact on Scientific Research

Highlighting the policy’s influence on research and innovation, Singh said educational reforms are helping produce a new generation of scientists driven by passion and curiosity.

He observed that many young researchers entering scientific institutions today are choosing science careers voluntarily. This, he said, has resulted in stronger commitment to research and improved innovation outcomes.

The minister emphasized that interest-driven learning can strengthen India’s scientific ecosystem and contribute to future technological advancements.

Technology Expanding Access to Education

Singh also highlighted the growing role of technology in making education more accessible across the country. He said digital platforms have helped bridge geographical and economic barriers that previously limited educational opportunities.

According to the minister, students from smaller towns and rural areas are increasingly performing well in national-level competitive examinations. Many of them are achieving success without relying on expensive coaching centres.

He stated that online resources, mobile technology and digital learning tools have helped create a more level playing field for aspirants from different backgrounds.

Students Must Leverage New Opportunities

The minister said perseverance, self-learning and effective use of available resources have become key factors in academic success. He noted that determination and hard work continue to play a crucial role in achieving educational goals.

Referring to the vision of a developed India by 2047, Singh expressed confidence that today’s youth will play a major role in shaping the nation’s future. He encouraged students to make the most of the opportunities available and contribute to innovation, public service and nation-building.

The minister also acknowledged the role of teachers and educators in guiding young minds and helping them achieve their full potential.
