New Delhi July 25 2024 : India has reaffirmed its stance on bilateral relations, asserting the principle of “freedom of choice” amidst criticism from US officials regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Russia. Responding to comments from the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Donald Lu, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal underscored the longstanding relationship between India and Russia based on mutual interests.
Jaiswal stated, “India-Russia relations are deeply rooted in mutual interests and understanding. In today’s multipolar world, every country has the sovereign right to choose its partners. It is crucial for all parties to acknowledge and respect this reality.”
Lu had expressed disappointment during a US Congress hearing over the timing of Modi’s visit to Moscow, particularly amidst ongoing international concerns, including Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. Despite this, Jaiswal clarified that India’s engagement with Russia remains grounded in historical ties and strategic cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Russia in early July commemorated 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The visit included summit-level talks with President Vladimir Putin, during which Modi reiterated India’s concerns about the conflict in Ukraine. However, no major defense deals were signed during the visit.
India’s defense cooperation with Russia has been a point of contention, with Lu acknowledging that India has reduced its defense imports from Russia in recent years due to logistical challenges. He noted ongoing efforts to address these concerns between the two nations.
The diplomatic exchange highlights India’s commitment to navigating global partnerships independently, maintaining its strategic autonomy despite external pressures.
