US, Saudi Arabia Sign Landmark Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement

The United States and Saudi Arabia have signed a landmark civil nuclear cooperation agreement, marking a significant step in expanding energy collaboration and strengthening strategic relations between the two countries. The agreement establishes the legal framework for future cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy and is expected to support long-term economic and security objectives.
The documents were signed by US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. Along with the civil nuclear cooperation pact, both nations also concluded a bilateral safeguards agreement aimed at ensuring that all nuclear activities remain dedicated to peaceful purposes under internationally accepted safety and non-proliferation standards.
According to the US Department of Energy, the agreement is expected to pave the way for American companies to participate in Saudi Arabia’s civil nuclear energy programme. The partnership is projected to create new commercial opportunities for US industries, strengthen supply chains and generate employment while helping Saudi Arabia diversify its energy resources.
US officials said the framework reinforces nuclear safety, security and non-proliferation principles while promoting the export of advanced American nuclear technologies. They also described the agreement as an important step in maintaining the United States’ leadership in the global civil nuclear sector.
Secretary Chris Wright stated that the partnership reflects the shared commitment of both nations to deepen economic cooperation and enhance regional stability through responsible nuclear development. He emphasised that the agreement adheres to the highest international standards for nuclear safety and safeguards.
The initiative aligns with the US administration’s broader strategy to expand international cooperation in civil nuclear technology and increase exports under the provisions of the Atomic Energy Act. Officials believe the agreement will contribute to economic growth, strengthen energy security and further deepen the long-standing strategic partnership between Washington and Riyadh.
The agreement will now be submitted to the US Congress for the mandatory review process before it can formally enter into force.
