New Delhi, July 29, 2026:
India’s digital governance ecosystem has witnessed significant expansion, with Common Service Centres (CSCs) emerging as key platforms for delivering government and public services at the grassroots level. The number of functional CSCs has increased from 83,950 in 2014 to more than 5 lakh in 2026, extending digital services to villages and remote areas across the country.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology informed Parliament that CSCs are now operational across more than 2.56 lakh Gram Panchayats, enabling citizens to access hundreds of digital services without travelling to government offices.
The development is part of the broader Digital India initiative, which builds upon the foundation created by the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) launched in 2006. The programme aims to make government services easily accessible, transparent and efficient through digital platforms.
According to the government data, CSCs facilitated nearly 485 crore transactions during the financial year 2025-26, reflecting the growing dependence of citizens on assisted digital services. These centres provide services related to government schemes, banking, education, healthcare, agriculture, utilities and various citizen-focused facilities.
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the progress of India’s digital public infrastructure in the Lok Sabha, stating that initiatives such as Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker and UMANG have transformed the way citizens interact with public services.
Under India’s digital ecosystem, Aadhaar has generated over 144 crore identities, enabling direct benefit transfers through hundreds of welfare schemes. The government said more than ₹52 lakh crore has been transferred through DBT mechanisms, helping improve transparency and reduce duplication.
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has also become a major pillar of India’s digital economy, connecting millions of individuals, merchants and banks through a single payment network. Meanwhile, DigiLocker has crossed 71 crore registered users, providing access to billions of digital documents.
The e-District Mission Mode Project has further strengthened digital service delivery by enabling online access to certificates, pensions, licences, revenue-related services and other government facilities. Nearly 2,000 district-level services have been integrated with digital platforms to provide anytime access to citizens.
District e-Governance Societies (DeGS) continue to play a crucial role in implementing and monitoring digital governance projects at district and sub-district levels by coordinating departments, infrastructure development and service delivery mechanisms.
A government assessment of Digital India initiatives found that a large majority of citizens are adopting digital services, with Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker and ration card services among the most widely used platforms. The study also indicated increased satisfaction among users due to faster, paperless and transparent service delivery.
Impact assessments of the CSC programme showed that these centres have reduced the burden on citizens by lowering travel distance, waiting time and service access costs. Studies also found that a majority of beneficiaries reported improved access to essential government services through CSCs.
To further strengthen rural digital connectivity, the government is expanding BharatNet infrastructure, with over 2.21 lakh Gram Panchayats made service-ready by June 2026. Additional measures include improving the Digital Seva Portal, introducing AI-based monitoring systems for CSC operations and enhancing training programmes for Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs).
Among states, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest CSC transaction volume during 2025-26 with over 1,177 lakh transactions, followed by Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Maharashtra. Haryana registered more than 146 lakh transactions through the CSC network during the same period.
The government said continued expansion of digital infrastructure, improved connectivity and stronger participation of states and districts will further accelerate citizen-centric governance and strengthen India’s digital public infrastructure.
