Kiren Rijiju Criticises Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks During Lok Sabha Debate on Anti-Paper Leak Bill

Parliamentary Affairs Minister urges Opposition to focus on proposed examination reforms instead of political exchanges

New Delhi, July 29:

Kiren Rijiju Rahul Gandhi became the focus of political debate in Parliament on Wednesday after the Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister criticised the Leader of the Opposition during discussions on the Anti-Paper Leak Bill.

Addressing reporters outside Parliament, Rijiju said the Centre had introduced the amendment after repeated concerns from students over paper leaks and examination malpractices. He maintained that the objective of the legislation is to strengthen transparency, restore confidence in the examination system, and ensure fair opportunities for candidates appearing in competitive tests.

The minister appealed to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi to use his speech in the House to discuss the contents of the bill and offer constructive suggestions. He said Parliament should focus on improving the examination system rather than shifting the debate towards unrelated political issues.

Rijiju also remarked that several Opposition MPs, including Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, had spoken on subjects that, according to him, were not directly connected with the legislation under discussion. He expressed hope that the debate would remain centred on the proposed reforms and their impact on students.

Targeting Rahul Gandhi’s style of political criticism, Rijiju alleged that the Congress leader had used language that was inconsistent with the standards expected in parliamentary proceedings. He said disagreements are a natural part of democracy, but political leaders should maintain dignity and civility while expressing their views in the House.

Meanwhile, Parliament is scheduled to continue discussions on the Anti-Paper Leak Bill before taking it up for consideration and passage. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh will move the legislation in the Lok Sabha.

In addition, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to introduce the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, during the day’s business.

Rahul Gandhi is also expected to participate in the debate on the Anti-Paper Leak Bill later in the day, with the Opposition likely to raise questions over the government’s approach to preventing examination irregularities and ensuring accountability.
