PM Modi Marks Global Tiger Day, Says India’s Conservation Model Reflects Harmony Between Nature and Development

Global Tiger Day 2026 was marked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday with a message highlighting India’s achievements in tiger conservation and reaffirming the country’s commitment to protecting wildlife and preserving biodiversity.

In his message, the Prime Minister noted that India is home to nearly 70 per cent of the world’s wild tiger population, describing it as a matter of national pride and a reflection of the country’s long-standing respect for nature.

He said India’s conservation success is rooted in its traditional values of coexisting with the natural world while being reinforced through scientific planning, public participation and sustainable development practices. He stressed that balancing ecological preservation with the needs of people remains central to the country’s wildlife strategy.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding tigers and their habitats, Modi said conservation efforts will continue to be guided by research-driven policies, greater involvement of local communities and measures that promote sustainable growth without compromising biodiversity.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the contribution of frontline forest personnel, wildlife experts, researchers and conservationists, saying their dedication has been instrumental in strengthening tiger protection across the country.

He further emphasized the need to support communities living near forests and continue efforts to reduce incidents of human-wildlife conflict through collaborative and long-term conservation initiatives.

Global Tiger Day is observed every year on July 29 to raise awareness about the conservation of tigers and encourage global efforts to protect the endangered species and its natural habitat. India has emerged as a global leader in tiger conservation through sustained habitat protection, anti-poaching measures and scientific wildlife management.

India has witnessed a steady rise in its tiger population over the past decade through initiatives such as habitat restoration, anti-poaching measures, improved wildlife monitoring and community participation. Conservation experts believe that continued cooperation between governments, local communities and environmental organisations will be essential to ensuring the long-term survival of the species and maintaining ecological balance.
