Two-time Olympic gold medallist Viktor Axelsen has decided to step away from professional badminton, citing ongoing physical issues that have made it impossible for him to compete at the highest level.
The Danish star confirmed his decision on Wednesday, explaining that a long-standing back problem has significantly impacted both his training and match performance. Although he underwent surgery last year and committed to an extensive recovery process, his condition did not improve as hoped.
According to Axelsen, a relapse later in the year worsened the situation, leaving him unable to maintain the intensity required in elite badminton. Persistent discomfort and limited mobility meant he could no longer prepare or perform to his usual standards.
Medical experts played a key role in shaping his decision. After reviewing his condition, doctors warned that continuing his career might require additional surgical intervention, with uncertain outcomes and potential long-term consequences. Even with treatment, returning to peak form remained highly unlikely.
Faced with these realities, Axelsen chose to prioritize his health, acknowledging that his body could no longer withstand the demands of professional sport.
The 32-year-old leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, having dominated the global badminton circuit for years. His achievements include multiple Olympic gold medals, world championship victories, and European titles, along with a crucial role in Denmark’s success in team competitions.
Axelsen’s retirement marks the conclusion of a remarkable chapter in badminton, as one of the sport’s most consistent and respected champions bids farewell to international competition.
