National Anti-Doping Act comes into force in India

New Delhi: The Government of India has formally implemented the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022 along with the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Act, 2025, introducing a stronger legal framework aimed at ensuring clean and transparent competition across all sporting disciplines.

The new legislation is designed to reinforce India’s anti-doping system by providing a clear statutory basis for testing, investigations, awareness programmes, results management and disciplinary procedures. Officials believe the updated framework will strengthen athlete protection while enhancing confidence in the country’s sports governance.

With the enforcement of these laws, India’s anti-doping regulations are now more closely aligned with the World Anti-Doping Code and the country’s commitments under the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport. The move is expected to improve India’s compliance with globally accepted anti-doping practices.

The 2025 amendment introduces key governance reforms intended to enhance the independence of anti-doping institutions and improve transparency in decision-making. It also seeks to strengthen procedural safeguards, ensure fair dispute resolution and increase accountability throughout the anti-doping process.

The government said the revised legal structure has been developed to create a balanced and athlete-focused system that protects the rights of sportspersons while maintaining the integrity of competitions. It is also expected to improve the efficiency and credibility of anti-doping administration in the country.

By bringing these laws into effect, the Centre has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ethical sporting values and creating a level playing field for athletes. The strengthened framework is expected to support India’s efforts to uphold fairness, integrity and excellence in both domestic and international sporting events.
