Chief Minister Rekha Gupta unveils ‘Mayur’, the mascot of the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2026

Global sporting spectacle to be held at Thyagaraj Stadium from July 27 to August 2

New Delhi, 14 July 2026 : Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday unveiled ‘Mayur’, the official mascot of the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2026. During the ceremony, she also launched the much-awaited official trailer of the championship. Highlighting the symbolic significance of the mascot, the Chief Minister said that ‘Mayur’ is inspired by India’s national bird and embodies energy, enthusiasm, vibrancy and positivity. She noted that the peacock’s feathers beautifully incorporate the national flags of all participating countries, reflecting the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and the universal message of sportsmanship.

The grand event, held at The Lalit, New Delhi, was attended by Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood, office-bearers of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation, representatives from various countries, players, distinguished members of the sporting fraternity, and a large number of young people.

Delhi strengthens its position on the global sporting map

Expressing pride over Delhi being chosen to host the prestigious international championship, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the event is a testimony to the national capital’s modern sports infrastructure, exceptional organisational capability and unwavering commitment to global sports. She said Delhi has a proven track record of successfully hosting major sporting events, from the Asian Games to the Commonwealth Games.

The Chief Minister said the Delhi Government is committed to providing young athletes with world-class facilities and international exposure to establish Delhi as the country’s leading sporting capital. She said the Indian team would enter the tournament as a strong contender on home soil and that the country’s players would showcase their talent and abilities while making the nation proud. She added that the championship would provide Indian players with exposure to world-class competition and inspire young athletes.

Congratulating the organising committee, the Sports Department, the Table Tennis Federation of India, volunteers and all supporting organisations, the Chief Minister said Delhi is once again ready to showcase its sporting culture, world-class infrastructure and hospitality to the world. She welcomed all participating countries and players to the national capital and extended her best wishes for the successful conduct of the championship.

Action begins at Thyagaraj Stadium from July 27

The seven-day sporting event will be held from July 27 to August 2, 2026, at the state-of-the-art Thyagaraj Stadium in New Delhi. Top paddlers from more than 25 Commonwealth countries will compete in the championship. Participating nations include England, Canada, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, Scotland, Wales, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, Malta, Botswana, Jamaica, Kenya and Trinidad and Tobago, among others. The finals will be played on August 2.

On the occasion, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood expressed his special gratitude to Chief Minister  Rekha Gupta, saying that despite her busy schedule, she continues to encourage Delhi’s athletes, the sporting ecosystem and sports culture. He said the Delhi Government, under the Chief Minister’s leadership, is committed to taking sports to new heights. He welcomed Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation President Vivek Kohli, Additional Director of the Education Department Nitin Jindal, office-bearers of the Table Tennis Federation of India, players, coaches, distinguished guests and sports enthusiasts.

The Education Minister said the unveiling of the official mascot ‘Mayur’ for the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2026 was not merely the launch of a mascot but also symbolised the unveiling of a new vision for the future of sports in Delhi. He said Delhi is not only the capital of India but is also moving towards establishing itself as the country’s sporting capital and, in the future, as a global sports hub. He said the championship would bring together the finest players from 25 Commonwealth countries to showcase their talent. He described the event as not the final destination for Delhi, but the beginning of a much larger journey.

The Education and Sports Minister said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji and the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Government is preparing the national capital to host future Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, World Championships and other major international sporting events. He said the government’s objective is not merely to organise sporting competitions but to build a strong, world-class sporting ecosystem.

He further said the Delhi Government is set to develop five Centres of Excellence to promote sports. These will include disciplines such as swimming, athletics, wrestling and table tennis. He added that these Centres of Excellence will not merely serve as training facilities but will also function as a strong sporting pipeline for nurturing Delhi’s future sporting talent.
