Kharge’s Remark on Modi Triggers Political Flashpoint Before Tamil Nadu Elections

Congress Chief Clarifies Statement After BJP’s Strong Reaction

A major political controversy erupted after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge made a sharp remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press interaction in Chennai, just days before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23.

While criticising the alliance between the AIADMK and the BJP, Kharge used strong language against the Prime Minister, questioning the regional party’s decision to partner with the ruling party at the Centre. His statement quickly drew widespread criticism, especially from BJP leaders, who termed it “irresponsible” and “insulting to the office of the Prime Minister.”

Facing mounting backlash, Kharge later issued a clarification, stating that his intent was not to label the Prime Minister in a literal sense. Instead, he explained that he was referring to what he described as a pattern of political intimidation against opposition leaders. According to him, central investigative agencies are allegedly being used to put pressure on political rivals, creating an atmosphere of fear in the political landscape.

The BJP, however, refused to accept the clarification and intensified its attack on the Congress leadership. Party spokespersons accused Kharge of lowering political discourse and demanded an unconditional apology. They also argued that such remarks reflect desperation ahead of key elections.

The controversy has added fresh heat to the already intense political climate in Tamil Nadu, where alliances and narratives are playing a crucial role in shaping voter sentiment. With campaigning in its final phase, both national and regional parties are sharpening their rhetoric, making this election one of the most closely watched contests in recent times.
