Chennai: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge ignited a political controversy on Tuesday after using the word “terrorist” while attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and criticising the AIADMK for partnering with the BJP ahead of elections.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Kharge questioned the regional party’s political positioning and accused it of compromising its identity by aligning with the BJP. His sharp criticism escalated when he used a term that quickly triggered backlash from political opponents.
As the remarks drew attention, Kharge later sought to clarify his statement, saying he did not intend to label the prime minister a terrorist, but meant that Modi “terrorises” political opponents through pressure and intimidation. He linked that claim to allegations involving central agencies and institutional overreach.
Kharge also accused the prime minister of violating the Model Code of Conduct by addressing the nation after the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 failed in Parliament. He further alleged that the Election Commission was not acting independently, while also reviving criticism over delimitation and the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill.
The Congress chief argued that the opposition had supported the women’s quota legislation when it was passed in 2023 and accused the government of changing its stance for political convenience.
The BJP reacted sharply, with party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla condemning Kharge’s language and accusing the Congress of repeatedly insulting the prime minister.
The exchange has added fresh intensity to the political battle in Tamil Nadu, where alliances and federal issues have become central themes in the run-up to elections.
