Glasgow, July 23, 2026;

Commonwealth Games 2026 India campaign began in Glasgow on Thursday with the country’s first lawn bowls fixtures, as a 124-member contingent prepared to compete across multiple disciplines during the multi-sport event.

The Games are being conducted across four competition venues in Glasgow, where Indian athletes will compete in both able-bodied and para-sport categories over the coming days.

India’s able-bodied athletes will participate in eight disciplines, including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, lawn bowls and swimming. Alongside them, the country’s para-athletes will compete in five events—para-athletics, para-swimming, para-powerlifting, para-track cycling and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.

Athletics is expected to attract significant attention, with competitions scheduled from July 27 to August 1 at Scotstoun Stadium. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will headline India’s athletics squad and is set to compete in the men’s javelin throw final on August 1. The star thrower will be looking to regain the Commonwealth crown after missing the previous edition in Birmingham because of injury. Chopra had earlier secured the gold medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Games.

Weightlifting will also be one of India’s strongest medal prospects during the Games. Olympic medallist and multiple Commonwealth champion Mirabai Chanu is expected to spearhead the country’s challenge when the competition begins on July 26.

With several experienced champions and promising young athletes in the squad, India will be aiming for another successful Commonwealth Games campaign as competition unfolds over the coming days.

Although the Glasgow edition features fewer sports than previous Commonwealth Games, Indian officials remain optimistic about the team’s medal prospects. Experienced athletes are expected to guide several young competitors making their Commonwealth Games debut. Strong performances in athletics, weightlifting, boxing and para-sports could significantly boost India’s overall medal tally as the competition progresses over the next several days.
