New Delhi, May 26, 2026: India on Tuesday unveiled the inaugural World Yogasana Championship (WYC) 2026, marking a historic milestone in the global recognition of Yogasana as a competitive sporting discipline. The championship, the first of its kind in the world, was officially launched by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi.
Scheduled to be held from June 4 to June 8, 2026, at the Eka Arena in Ahmedabad, the championship is expected to bring together athletes, officials, and delegations from more than 60 countries, including nations from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
The launch ceremony witnessed the unveiling of the championship logo, trophy, official jersey, and mascot, symbolising India’s efforts to transform Yogasana from a traditional wellness practice into an internationally recognised sport.
Addressing the event, Mandaviya said India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has successfully taken yoga to the global stage and is now leading efforts to establish Yogasana as a competitive sporting discipline. He described the championship as a reflection of India’s cultural heritage, youth potential, and vision of emerging as a global sporting leader.
The event is being supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Ministry of AYUSH, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Sports Authority of Gujarat, Gujarat Tourism, and the Gujarat Yogasana Sports Association.
Participation from More Than 60 Countries
Organisers said the championship has received strong international interest, with participating nations including Uganda, Zambia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kenya, Japan, Oman, Mauritius, and the Netherlands, among others.
According to organisers, the event represents a major step toward securing broader international recognition for Yogasana and advancing its long-term goal of inclusion in major multi-sport competitions, including the Olympic movement.

Ahmedabad has been selected as the host city for the inaugural edition, further reinforcing Gujarat’s growing reputation as a destination for international sporting events and wellness-related activities.
The championship is expected to attract athletes, coaches, judges, and delegates from across the globe, while also showcasing India’s leadership in promoting yoga and holistic well-being on the international stage.
