Yogi Adityanath Targets Ajay Rai Over Ayodhya Fish Feast Controversy

Raebareli, August 24, 2026; Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday criticised state Congress president Ajay Rai over the controversy surrounding an alleged fish feast at a community programme in Ayodhya, accusing the Congress leader of sending contradictory signals through his religious and political conduct.

Addressing a gathering in Raebareli, Yogi alleged that Rai had visited Hanumangarhi for prayers before attending a Nishad community event where fish was reportedly served. The Chief Minister used the episode to question what he described as the Congress leader’s approach towards religion.

Yogi also launched a broader political attack on the Congress, alleging that the party had previously failed to take a strong stand against criminal elements in Uttar Pradesh. Referring to an earlier incident involving a mafia figure, he claimed that Rai had not spoken against the accused and alleged that the situation changed only after government action.

The remarks came amid a growing political dispute over Rai’s participation in the Ayodhya programme organised by members of the Nishad community. The reported serving of fish at the event has triggered criticism from BJP leaders and a counter-response from the Congress.

Rai has rejected the allegation levelled against him and asked the Chief Minister to produce photographic evidence. He said he would resign if Yogi could provide pictures proving that he had participated in eating fish at the programme.

The Congress leader further clarified that he had attended the Ayodhya gathering after receiving an invitation from the Nishad Samaj. According to Rai, what food was prepared at the venue was the community’s own matter and he left after attending the programme.

The exchange between the BJP and Congress has intensified the political debate in Uttar Pradesh, with the Ayodhya event becoming the latest flashpoint over religion, political conduct and competing allegations between the two parties.
