New Delhi, April 21, 2026: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has emphasized its continued commitment to enhancing road safety alongside rapid expansion of India’s National Highway network. The ministry stated that modern infrastructure development is not limited to widening roads but also focuses on protecting lives of workers and commuters through advanced safety systems.

According to the official update, Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs), a globally recognized impact absorbing safety technology, are being actively deployed across highway construction and maintenance zones. These systems are designed to reduce accident severity by absorbing collision energy and safeguarding both highway workers and vehicle occupants in case of impact.
Officials noted that workers engaged in highway maintenance often operate in high-risk environments where fast moving traffic and low visibility increase accident chances. To address these concerns, the ministry has encouraged concessionaires to adopt advanced safety mechanisms such as TMAs along with integrated warning systems.

One such concessionaire managing nine National Highway projects covering a total length of 681 kilometres across Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat has implemented this initiative on a large scale. Under this deployment, 33 Truck Mounted Attenuators and 15 Towable Truck Mounted Attenuators have been installed across multiple project sites.
These safety vehicles are also equipped with high intensity wig wag warning lights that display directional signals to alert approaching traffic. The system is particularly effective during night operations, foggy weather conditions, and high speed traffic movement, helping prevent collisions before they occur.

The deployed equipment complies with international safety benchmarks including MASH Test Level 3 and NCHRP 350 standards and is capable of withstanding impacts at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour.
MoRTH stated that this initiative reflects its broader vision of ensuring that highway development in India is both fast and safe. The ministry added that as road infrastructure expands across the country, equal importance is being given to advanced safety measures to protect human life and create safer travel conditions for all road users.
