Chennai, August 5, 2024: The IIT Madras Research Park marked a significant milestone on Monday with the launch of India’s first large-scale 1MWh lithium-ion battery storage system. The event was graced by Michelle Lujan Grisham, Governor of New Mexico.
This innovative technology, developed by the Center for Excellence in Energy and Telecommunications (CEET), is part of IITM Research Park’s ambitious ’10x initiative – Towards 100% Renewable Energy.’ The battery storage system addresses a critical need for reliable storage solutions as more buildings adopt renewable energy systems. Designed for easy deployment and modularity, this system is the first in India to provide a stationary storage solution for a building campus, traditionally dominated by EV battery applications. Now operational, it utilizes wind and solar energy, boosting the campus’s renewable energy share to 90%.
The IIT Madras Research Park’s initiative serves as a model for commercial complexes and manufacturing units aiming to transition to green energy while maintaining profitability. To promote widespread adoption, IIT Madras has launched the “Zero to Green Alliance” to replicate this approach across buildings and industrial sectors, driving action towards a net-zero future.
Following the launch, a round-table discussion on climate change and renewable energy was held, featuring Tamil Nadu IT and Digital Services Minister Dr. Palanivel Thiagarajan, industry leaders, startups, and academia. The discussion focused on strategies for collaboration between the Research Park and the United States in co-developing technologies.
Dr. Thiagarajan highlighted Tamil Nadu’s potential for offshore wind energy and the government’s efforts to enhance policy, regulations, incentives, and infrastructure. He praised IIT Madras and the Research Park for their roles in attracting investments, fostering innovation, and adding value through the exchange of ideas. The introduction of the large-scale battery storage solution is a pivotal advancement in India’s energy sector, aiming to reduce reliance on carbon-emitting fossil fuels and accelerate the transition towards a net-zero future.
