Madhya Pradesh CM Celebrates International Tiger Day, Highlights State’s Unique Tiger Population

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav Praises Madhya Pradesh's Tiger Reserve and Unique Urban-Wildlife Harmony

BHOPAL July 29 2024 : On International Tiger Day, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed pride in the state’s significant tiger population and its unique urban-wildlife dynamic. Speaking at an event held at the Kushabhau Thakre Hall International Convention Centre (Minto Hall) in Bhopal, CM Yadav highlighted the fact that about 20 percent of India’s tigers are found in Madhya Pradesh.

“We are fortunate to have a unique coexistence where humans traverse the city roads by day and tigers roam at night,” Yadav remarked, emphasizing the rare urban-wildlife interaction in Bhopal. He noted that while many state capitals exist across the country, Bhopal stands out for its nocturnal tiger population.

The Chief Minister detailed that Madhya Pradesh is home to approximately 20 percent of the nation’s tiger population, underscoring the state’s exceptional role in tiger conservation. He also pointed out the presence of seven tiger reserves within the state, which attract over 25 lakh tourists annually and generate significant revenue of approximately Rs. 55 to 60 crore.

Additionally, CM Yadav highlighted the recent reintroduction of cheetahs to the state, noting that cheetahs are now found in Madhya Pradesh, a rare occurrence in Asia. He praised the tiger’s prowess, contrasting it with the lion, which he described as a “lazy” predator.

“We take pride in being known as the Tiger State. Unlike the lion, which relies on others for its sustenance, the tiger demonstrates true strength by hunting for itself,” Yadav stated.

Addressing reporters, the Chief Minister reiterated his congratulations on International Tiger Day and affirmed the state’s commitment to wildlife conservation. “Madhya Pradesh is distinguished by its high tiger population, and Bhopal uniquely features tigers living in close proximity to the city limits. Our Forest Department is also making strides with the Cheetah Project, ensuring that we continue to support and preserve our wildlife heritage,” he concluded.
