Haryana Govt Announces 10% Quota and Additional Benefits for Agniveers in State Recruitment

Chandigarh, July 17 2024 : Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced on Wednesday several new benefits for Agniveers who complete their four-year tenure in the armed forces, ANI reported. These benefits include age relaxation in state public services recruitment, horizontal reservations, and subsidies for industrial units that employ Agniveers.

Chief Minister Saini revealed that Agniveers will receive a three-year age relaxation for government posts in Group B and C, with a five-year relaxation for the first batch of Agniveers. The first batch is expected to complete their tenure by August 2027.

Regarding horizontal reservations, Saini stated, “The government will provide a 5% horizontal reservation for Agniveers in direct recruitment to civil posts in Group C and a 1% horizontal reservation in Group B.” Additionally, a 10% horizontal reservation will be provided in direct recruitment for Constable, Mining Guard, Forest Guard, Jail Warden, and SPO positions.

To encourage private sector employment of Agniveers, Saini announced subsidies for industrial units offering salaries above ₹30,000 per month to Agniveers. “Our government will provide a subsidy of ₹60,000 per annum to any industrial unit employing an Agniveer,” he added.

The Agnipath scheme, announced in June 2022, recruits personnel below the rank of officers to the Indian armed forces for a four-year period. After this tenure, up to 25% of recruits, known as Agniveers, may be selected for permanent commission based on merit and other criteria.

Agniveers receive a salary along with risk and hardship allowances, and a lump sum severance package of approximately ₹11.71 lakhs from Seva Nidhi, a government fund. In the event of death on duty, their families receive a lump sum of one crore, including Seva Nidhi, and full pay for the unserved period. Injured Agniveers may receive compensation up to ₹44 lakh depending on the severity of their injuries.

Despite these benefits, the Agnipath scheme has faced opposition, primarily because Agniveers do not receive pensions after their short tenure. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has criticized the NDA government, alleging discrimination in benefits for the families of slain soldiers. During the general election campaign, Gandhi frequently attacked the BJP over the scheme. Following the formation of the 18th Lok Sabha, NDA government allies have suggested a review of the scheme.
