Munich, June 9 — Portugal etched their name in European football history by clinching a second UEFA Nations League title after a nerve-racking 5–3 penalty shoot-out victory over Spain, following a thrilling 2–2 draw after extra time at the Munich Football Arena on Sunday night. Veteran superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, defying age at 40, found the back of the net in regulation time, becoming the oldest player to score in a Nations League final. His goal helped Portugal twice come from behind, before goalkeeper Diogo Costa’s crucial penalty save and Rúben Neves’ composed finish secured the title.

Spain had taken an early lead in the 21st minute as young sensation Lamine Yamal delivered a teasing ball, which Martin Zubimendi tapped in amid defensive confusion. Portugal responded swiftly through a thunderous strike by Nuno Mendes — later named Player of the Match — just five minutes later. Mikel Oyarzabal put Spain back in front with a clinical finish off a brilliant Pedri assist before half-time, but Ronaldo volleyed home in the 61st minute after Mendes’ deflected cross, leveling the score at 2–2.

Despite chances from both sides in extra time, including close calls from Diogo Jota and Nélson Semedo, the deadlock remained — sending the Nations League final to penalties for the first time.

After four successful spot kicks each, Spain’s Álvaro Morata saw his shot saved by Costa, allowing Neves to fire in the winning penalty and spark euphoric scenes among Portuguese players and fans.

“This team has evolved into something special,” said Portugal manager Roberto Martínez. “There’s belief, depth, and leadership across the squad.”

Nuno Mendes, who had also shone in the semi-final, was named the Player of the Tournament. He paid tribute to Ronaldo’s enduring influence: “What he brings to this team, even at 40, is beyond words.”

Spain, meanwhile, suffered their third straight Nations League final defeat. Head coach Luis de la Fuente rued the outcome: “The margins in football are so small. It’s tough, but we must move forward.”

Despite the loss, Spain set a new record for most goals in a single Nations League edition with 25. Midfield maestro Bernardo Silva, appearing in his 26th Nations League match — equalling the all-time record — summed up the triumph: “We showed heart, unity, and resilience tonight.”

Both teams will now turn their attention to FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, with Portugal in Group F and Spain in Group E.
