Lucknow, May 25, 2026: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday reviewed the performance of the State Tax Department during a meeting with officials from the department’s headquarters, governance, and field units. The review focused on revenue collection, tax administration, and measures aimed at improving ease of doing business in the state.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized that the State Tax Department must serve as a model of trust-based governance while ensuring sustained growth in revenue collection. He directed officials to provide honest taxpayers with greater convenience, respect, and prompt grievance redressal. He also stressed the need to eliminate unnecessary delays in GST registration, return filing, appeal disposal, and refund processing.
Reviewing the performance of various tax zones through direct interaction with zonal officers, Yogi Adityanath instructed senior officials to engage directly with traders and business communities in the field. He also called for the preparation of special action plans for zones recording lower performance levels.
Officials informed the Chief Minister that Uttar Pradesh generated ₹1,15,977 crore in revenue from GST and VAT during the financial year 2025-26. The department also recovered ₹2,658 crore in outstanding GST dues, while enforcement units collected an additional ₹2,071 crore through targeted recovery efforts.
The meeting was also informed that Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the state with the highest number of GST taxpayers in the country, with 21.82 lakh active registered taxpayers.
The Chief Minister directed officials to continue strict action against fake firms, tax evasion, and bogus billing practices. He stressed the use of advanced technologies, including data analytics and artificial intelligence, to strengthen transparency, accountability, and efficiency in tax administration.
According to the department’s presentation, a total of 63,797 GST and VAT appeals were disposed of during 2025-26. Yogi Adityanath instructed officials to ensure the timely resolution of pending appeals and further streamline the refund system so that businesses do not face disruptions to their working capital.
