New Delhi, May 30, 2026: Star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been officially cleared to compete in the 53kg category at the Asian Games 2026 selection trials, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) confirmed on Saturday.
The trials are currently underway at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi, where weigh-ins for all categories, including the women’s 53kg division, were conducted as per the scheduled programme. The WFI stated that all eligible wrestlers, including Phogat, completed the required formalities and were approved to participate.
According to the federation, athletes who met the eligibility conditions were cleared to compete in the selection process, which will determine India’s representatives for the upcoming continental competition.
Vinesh Phogat, who weighed in at 53.9 kg, has been placed in the 53kg draw. She is set to compete against strong contenders such as Meenakshi Goyat and Antim Panghal in the trials.
The selection trials are being closely monitored with independent oversight. As per directions from the Delhi High Court, representatives from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) are present as observers to ensure transparency in the process.
WFI President Sanjay Singh is also present at the venue as the trials progress under strict supervision and video recording arrangements mandated by the court.
Earlier, the Supreme Court granted interim relief to Phogat and sought a response from the WFI regarding its petition challenging her participation. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on June 1.
The Delhi High Court had earlier directed that Phogat be allowed to compete in the selection trials and that the process be conducted under independent observation to maintain fairness and transparency.
Phogat’s eligibility became a legal and administrative matter after the WFI’s selection policy restricted participation to medal winners from specified domestic tournaments held in 2025 and 2026, which she had missed due to maternity-related absence.
The Court had earlier observed that the policy appeared restrictive and potentially discriminatory in nature, particularly considering her sabbatical for pregnancy and subsequent return to competition in 2026.
The selection trials are expected to conclude after multiple rounds, with winners earning the opportunity to represent India at the Asian Games later this year.
