Amarnath Yatra Begins Amid Tight Security in Kashmir

Thousands Set Off on Spiritual Trek Under Heightened Vigilance

Srinagar ,29 June, 2024: The annual Amarnath Yatra commenced on Saturday in Kashmir, with the first batch of pilgrims departing from the twin base camps in Baltal and Nunwan-Pahalgam, heading toward the revered Himalayan cave shrine.

Officials reported that over 9,000 devotees began their trek via the routes in Ganderbal and Anantnag districts, aiming to offer prayers at the Lord Shiva shrine, renowned for its naturally formed ice lingam. The initial groups of pilgrims were ceremonially flagged off by the deputy commissioners of Ganderbal and Anantnag, alongside senior government officials.

Pilgrims from the Baltal base camp will undertake a 13-kilometer journey to the shrine, situated at an altitude of 3,880 meters, while those from the traditional Nunwan-Pahalgam route will cover approximately 48 kilometers.

“All arrangements for the annual pilgrimage, including security, have been put in place,” an official stated. A robust security apparatus, comprising thousands of police officers, central armed police forces (CAPF), and Army personnel, has been deployed along the yatra routes. Drones and CCTV cameras assist in maintaining round-the-clock surveillance.

The pilgrimage is set to conclude on August 19. Last year, 450,000 pilgrims visited the sacred site, and authorities expect an increase in the number this year.
