New Delhi, July 16: The Ministry of Power has released the draft Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE-III) norms for public and stakeholder consultation, proposing stricter fuel efficiency standards for passenger vehicles to be sold in India over the next five years.
According to the draft, the new norms will apply to M1 category passenger vehicles manufactured or imported for sale in the country during the period 2027-28 to 2031-32. The move is aimed at improving fuel efficiency and supporting India’s broader energy conservation and emissions reduction goals.
The ministry has invited comments and suggestions from automobile manufacturers, industry bodies, experts and members of the public before finalising the regulations.
Stakeholders can submit their feedback to the Under Secretary (Energy Conservation), Ministry of Power, or send their suggestions via email. The deadline for submitting responses is August 6, 2026.
The draft CAFE-III norms will also be made available on the official websites of the Ministry of Power and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) to facilitate wider public consultation.
The proposed framework is expected to play a key role in shaping fuel economy standards for future passenger vehicles while encouraging manufacturers to adopt more energy-efficient technologies.
