Authorities in Zanzibar have dismissed circulating claims that Miami-based influencer Ashlee Jenae died due to strangulation, stating that the investigation into her death is still ongoing and no official conclusion has been reached.
A senior police official, Zuberi Chembera, clarified that documents shared on social media suggesting strangulation are not authentic and were not issued by any authorised body. He emphasised that the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after a complete forensic review.
Police have detained and questioned Jenae’s fiancé, Joe McCann, though officials have described him as a witness at this stage. His passport has reportedly been held as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Investigators are working alongside multiple agencies, with representatives linked to the victim’s family and diplomatic channels also involved in the process.
According to preliminary findings, hotel staff were alerted after a guest reported hearing a disturbance from the couple’s room. Management later shifted McCann to another room within the property.
In a separate development, a hotel employee who had earlier interacted with Jenae reportedly found her in a critical condition. She was rushed to a medical facility but could not be saved.
A post-mortem examination is currently being conducted at a hospital in Zanzibar to determine the precise cause of death.
While initial reports suggested that authorities were treating the case as a suicide, Jenae’s family has strongly disputed this version, saying the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear and raise serious questions.
The 31-year-old had travelled to Tanzania to celebrate her birthday and recent engagement, sharing moments from the trip on social media shortly before her death.
With investigations still in progress, officials have urged the public to avoid speculation and wait for confirmed findings.
