Philippines Bomb Blast Near Justice Ministry, Second Suspected Explosive Found Before President’s Address

Philippine security agencies have launched an investigation after an improvised explosive device detonated near the country’s Department of Justice early Monday, while another suspected explosive device was later discovered close to the Senate complex, just hours before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s annual State of the Nation Address.

According to officials, the first explosion occurred shortly after midnight near the entrance of the Justice Ministry. No injuries or fatalities were reported, although the blast caused minor damage to nearby property.

Later in the morning, security personnel responded to reports of a suspicious object found near the Senate building. Explosive ordnance disposal teams secured the area and recovered components believed to be part of a homemade explosive device, including a detonator, a timing mechanism and a container holding an unidentified substance, which has been sent for forensic examination.

Philippine National Police chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said investigators are examining whether the two incidents are connected. He acknowledged that despite existing security measures for bomb threats and other emergencies, the overnight explosion occurred outside the Justice Department.

Police officials have not yet confirmed the strength of the explosion or identified those responsible. Investigators said the probe remains in its early stages and more information will be released after forensic analysis is completed.

The incidents took place as authorities intensified security across the capital ahead of President Marcos Jr.’s annual address to the nation, delivered amid a politically sensitive period marked by ongoing national issues and heightened public attention.
