Thiruvananthapuram, July 7: A massive mudslide triggered by relentless monsoon rains struck the under-construction Wayanad tunnel road project in Kerala on Tuesday, leaving one person dead while seven others remain missing, according to the State government.

The landslide occurred near Meenakshi Bridge at Kalladi, close to Meppadi, where construction work was underway on the Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi tunnel road connecting Wayanad with Kozhikode. Rescue teams rushed to the site immediately after the incident and launched an extensive search operation.

Chief Minister P. Satheesan said one person had lost their life in the incident, while seven others were still unaccounted for. He added that seven injured people had been admitted to hospital for treatment.

Officials said several workers trapped under the debris were rescued alive and shifted to nearby medical facilities. The landslide struck close to temporary labour accommodation set up for workers engaged in the tunnel construction project.

Construction activities at the site had already been suspended after authorities issued a stop-work order due to continuous heavy rainfall and the risk of landslides.

Emergency personnel, including disaster response teams, police, firefighters and local volunteers, are continuing rescue efforts amid challenging weather conditions. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as operations remain underway to trace those still missing.

The Wayanad tunnel road project is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving road connectivity between Kozhikode and Wayanad. However, persistent monsoon rains have disrupted work and heightened concerns over safety in the hilly region.
