18 Namo Oxygen Parks Inaugurated in Delhi; Centre & Delhi Government Launch Major Green Initiatives on World Environment Day

Working Plan for NCT Delhi, Asola Bhatti Sanctuary Management Plan and Delhi Bird Atlas released to strengthen Scientific Environmental Governance

New Delhi, June 5: Marking World Environment Day 2026, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated 18 Namo Oxygen Parks across the national capital and launched a series of environmental initiatives under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.

The main event was held at the Namo Oxygen Park in Maidangarhi, where leaders emphasized the importance of urban greening, ecological conservation and public participation in environmental protection.

Speaking at the event, Bhupender Yadav highlighted that the world is currently facing three major environmental challenges — climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation. He said India has emerged as a global leader in environmental action under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi through initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, PM Surya Ghar Yojana, expansion of Ramsar Wetlands and the International Big Cat Alliance.

The minister stressed that environmental conservation cannot succeed without active public participation. Referring to the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, he said the initiative has transformed tree plantation into a nationwide people’s movement rooted in gratitude and environmental responsibility.

Yadav also noted that Delhi is taking significant steps to improve air quality through measures including mechanized road cleaning, online emission monitoring systems, air pollution control devices and the promotion of electric mobility.

As part of the programme, three key environmental publications were released:

  • Working Plan for NCT Delhi (2026–27 to 2036–37): A ten-year roadmap for environmental governance and sustainable development.
  • Management Plan for Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary (2024–25 to 2034–35): A comprehensive strategy for biodiversity conservation and habitat protection.
  • Delhi Bird Atlas: A landmark citizen science initiative documenting bird species and avian diversity across Delhi.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the Delhi Government has set a target of planting 15 lakh trees across the city during the current year to improve air quality and expand green cover.

She emphasized that citizens must not only participate in plantation drives but also take responsibility for nurturing and protecting the planted saplings.

The inauguration of 18 Namo Oxygen Parks is expected to strengthen Delhi’s urban green infrastructure, improve biodiversity, enhance air quality and provide recreational green spaces for residents. The event concluded with a plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign and recognition of civil society groups that contributed to the Delhi Bird Atlas project.

The initiative reflects the combined commitment of the Central and Delhi Governments towards sustainable development, ecological restoration and a cleaner, greener future for the national capital.
