Guwahati: Severe weather conditions across Assam have left one person dead, caused extensive flooding in Guwahati and damaged homes and crops in multiple districts, as authorities remain on alert for more rain and thunderstorms.
The fatality was reported from Kamrup district’s Chaygaon area, where a youth died after a tree branch fell on him during a Bihu cultural event disrupted by violent winds and rain. Eyewitnesses said several people had taken shelter under a tree when the storm intensified.
The storm system impacted several districts, including Goalpara and Bongaigaon, where strong winds and heavy showers reportedly caused widespread property damage and affected agricultural land.
In Guwahati, waterlogging continued to disrupt normal life for a third straight day, with several low-lying neighbourhoods remaining submerged. Areas such as Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar and Nabin Nagar were among the worst affected, while residents in partially drained areas struggled to clear water and mud from their homes.
Authorities are also probing a body recovered from the Basistha river in the Saukuchi area, believed to be linked to a youth reported missing since Sunday, though formal identification is pending.
The weather crisis comes after another rain-related death was reported earlier when a woman died after falling into a drain in the Maligaon area, intensifying scrutiny over urban infrastructure and drainage management.
The flooding triggered protests by the All Assam Students Union, which questioned long-standing expenditure on city development and demanded accountability over recurring artificial flooding in Guwahati.
State officials have directed civic and disaster management agencies to maintain round-the-clock preparedness in vulnerable zones. Residents in landslide-prone hilly areas have also been advised to stay cautious as forecasts indicate the likelihood of continued rainfall and thunderstorms over the coming days.
With emergency teams on high alert and weather conditions still unstable, authorities said efforts are underway to prevent further loss of life and reduce damage in affected areas.
