New Delhi, April 21, 2026: Under the leadership of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the capital city has achieved a major milestone in women-centric public transport reforms as the “Pink Saheli Smart Card” scheme crosses the issuance of 5 lakh cards. According to the latest figures, more than 5.30 lakh women have enrolled in the initiative, with all issued cards currently active and being used for daily travel across the city’s transport network.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the achievement reflects not only the success of the scheme but also the growing trust of women in Delhi’s public transport system. She added that the government remains committed to ensuring safety, convenience, and empowerment for every woman in the capital. According to her, the smart card is not merely a travel pass but a symbol of dignity, digital identity, and independence that enhances access to education, employment, and mobility opportunities.
The scheme is based on tap and go technology under the National Common Mobility Card system, eliminating the need for paper tickets. Women passengers can simply tap the card on electronic ticket machines and board buses seamlessly. The facility currently allows free travel for women and transgender individuals in city buses, while also enabling usage in metro and other public transport services on a paid basis. The initiative covers all women and transgender residents of Delhi above the age of five years.
The smart card also offers digital features such as easy online recharge and travel history tracking, making the system more transparent and efficient. Authorities believe this digitisation has improved transport data management and service planning. Economically, the scheme has reduced travel expenses significantly, with experts estimating monthly savings of around Rs 1200 to Rs 2400 per user, thereby providing financial relief to families while increasing women’s participation in public transport.
Officials further noted that the increased presence of women in buses has contributed to a safer commuting environment. The government has indicated plans to expand and strengthen the scheme further in the coming years, with a focus on making Delhi’s public transport system more inclusive, modern, and globally competitive. The Chief Minister reiterated that the vision is to build a “Viksit Delhi” where every woman can travel safely, confidently, and with dignity through advanced digital governance and smart mobility solutions.
