Ceasefire Offers Hope as Kashmiri Students Return from Iran Amid Conflict

Over 1,100 students reach home as evacuation nears end, but future of medical studies remains uncertain

New Delhi: A temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran has brought relief to hundreds of Kashmiri students studying in Iran, many of whom have now safely returned home after being caught in the conflict.

Out of nearly 1,200 students—most pursuing medical degrees—around 1,100 have already reached Jammu and Kashmir. The remaining group, currently transiting through neighbouring regions, is expected to arrive in India shortly.

According to Nasir Khuehami of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association, the evacuation process is almost complete, with students having crossed international borders and heading back via connecting routes.

He noted that while the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian mission in Tehran assisted with relocation and safety arrangements during the crisis, most students arranged their return journeys through commercial flights.

Despite the risks highlighted by the conflict, Iran continues to attract Indian students, particularly from Kashmir, due to its affordability and familiar cultural environment.

Medical education in Iran costs significantly less compared to private colleges in India or other countries, making it a practical option for many families. Parents also cite similarities in lifestyle and strong academic infrastructure as key reasons for choosing Iranian institutions.

While the safe return of students has brought relief, uncertainty looms over their academic future. Many fear prolonged disruption if tensions flare up again.

Some students say the emotional strain has been considerable, especially after experiencing repeated instability within a short span of time. There are growing demands for policy support, including possible academic migration options similar to those offered during other international crises.

Parents and students alike are now hoping that the current truce holds, allowing them to return and complete their courses without further interruptions. For many, resuming education in Iran remains the preferred option, provided the situation stabilises.
