Tezpur: A polling official on election duty was found dead on Thursday in Sonitpur district, even as voting for the state assembly elections proceeded without disruption.
The deceased, identified as Deben Horo (45), had been assigned the role of second polling officer in the Naduar constituency. Officials said he was posted at a polling booth located in a local primary school in the Dolapani area.
According to authorities, Horo was discovered unconscious in his room early in the morning. He was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Preliminary inputs suggest that the death may have been caused by an existing health condition, though the exact reason is yet to be confirmed. Officials said further medical examination will determine the cause.
Horo was a resident of a village in the Chariduar region and worked as an assistant teacher in a government school.
Despite the incident, election proceedings at the polling station continued as planned. A reserve staff member was quickly deployed to take over duties, ensuring that voting began on schedule and continued smoothly.
Polling across the 126 assembly constituencies is underway and will conclude later in the day, while counting of votes is scheduled for early May.
