Chief Minister Rekha Gupta calls for environmental conservation and modern agriculture practices

New Delhi, April 1, 2026: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta praised ongoing efforts towards sustainability and agriculture development, stating that the vision of a developed India under Narendra Modi is closely linked to strong agricultural growth and farmer prosperity.

She noted that farming in the country is gradually transforming through modern techniques such as precision agriculture, climate responsive practices, and technology driven solutions. Stressing the urgency of environmental protection, the Chief Minister called for increased focus on plantation drives, water conservation, and urban green initiatives. She also encouraged the use of indigenous tree varieties like peepal, neem, banyan, and mango to strengthen ecological balance.

Highlighting a major step, Gupta said that nearly 4,200 hectares of Ridge land have been brought under notification to boost green cover in the capital. She also sought collaboration with agricultural institutions to enhance soil quality, promote urban greenery, and adopt scientific plantation methods.

Emphasising responsible use of natural resources, she urged experts, students, and researchers to contribute towards improving groundwater levels, advancing agriculture, and supporting urban farming initiatives. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector through innovation and research.

Speaking at the event, Delhi Minister for Social Welfare and welfare of SC and ST communities, Ravinder Indraj Singh, underlined the importance of restoring traditional water sources such as ponds and johads to improve water availability and quality.

He expressed concern over the environmental and health impact of excessive chemical fertiliser use, noting a gradual shift towards organic farming practices encouraged under national leadership. He also stressed the need to ensure fair pricing for organic produce to support farmers economically.

The minister added that despite rapid urban growth, a significant portion of land in Delhi remains under cultivation, with farmers continuing to play a crucial role. He said government initiatives promoting sustainable agriculture and modern technology adoption are expected to further strengthen the farming community and contribute to a greener and healthier capital.
