New Delhi, March 30, 2026: The government has given approval for the redevelopment of Berth Number Nine at New Mangalore Port, a move aimed at boosting the handling capacity of liquid bulk cargo and improving overall maritime efficiency in the region.
The project will involve dismantling ageing structures and building modern infrastructure designed to handle commodities such as crude oil, petroleum products, and liquefied gas. Once completed, the upgraded berth will be capable of accommodating much larger vessels, significantly enhancing the port’s operational capability.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted that the initiative reflects the broader push under the leadership of Narendra Modi to modernise India’s maritime sector and prepare it for future trade and energy requirements.
With an estimated investment of over four hundred crore rupees, the redevelopment will be carried out through a partnership model involving private participation. The project is expected to substantially increase cargo handling capacity while ensuring improved efficiency through the use of advanced equipment and automated systems.
Officials noted that the new infrastructure will not only improve economies of scale but also lower logistics costs and strengthen the competitiveness of Indian ports. Enhanced safety systems and modern handling mechanisms will also be introduced to ensure secure operations involving sensitive cargo.
The development is expected to play a key role in supporting industrial growth and strengthening supply chains, particularly for energy resources, while reinforcing the port’s importance as a major gateway for the southern region.
