Santiago, Dec 6 – In a thrilling encounter, the Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team secured a remarkable victory against New Zealand, winning 3-2 in a sudden-death penalty shootout after the regular time ended in a 3-3 draw during the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup 2023. Ropni Kumari (8’), Jyoti Chhatri (17’), and Sunelita Toppo (53’) scored for India, while Isabella Story (11’), Madeline Harris (14’), and Riana Pho (49’) netted goals for New Zealand.
The penalty shootout saw Sakshi Rana, Preeti, and Mumtaz Khan scoring for India, securing the win. New Zealand’s Hannah Cotter and Riana Pho converted their shots as well. Despite India starting with a lead through Ropni Kumari’s early goal, New Zealand fought back to lead 2-1 by the end of the first quarter. Jyoti Chhatri equalized for India, and the teams entered halftime level at 2-2.
The third quarter remained goalless, but New Zealand took the lead early in the fourth quarter. Sunelita Toppo’s goal in the 53rd minute brought India back level. Despite both teams pressing for a winner in the final minutes, the match ended 3-3, leading to a penalty shootout. India’s goalkeeper Madhuri Kindo played a crucial role, making four consecutive saves to seal the victory.
