EC Notices AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal Over Alleged Yamuna Poisoning Remarks

New Delhi : The Election Commission (EC) has issued a notice to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal in response to complaints filed by BJP and Congress regarding his claims of poisoning the Yamuna River. The notice demands that Kejriwal provide a response, including any supporting evidence, by 8 PM today.

The allegations, made by Kejriwal during a recent interview, sparked controversy after he claimed that the Yamuna River was being deliberately poisoned. In its notice, the EC highlighted that the Delhi Jal Board’s report, which was reviewed by the Commission, made no mention of any poisoning incidents in the Yamuna. The Commission emphasized the need for factual basis when making such claims, especially when the statements could have serious consequences.

The Election Commission noted that these allegations could create enmity between regional groups and even residents of neighboring states. They could potentially lead to law-and-order issues, especially given the crucial importance of water availability during this period.

The BJP and Congress both filed complaints with the Commission, arguing that such statements could damage public trust and disrupt peace, particularly in the run-up to the elections. The Commission has underscored the responsibility of political leaders to ensure that their public statements are grounded in facts, particularly when they involve issues that could incite panic or alter public perceptions.

In its response, Kejriwal has been given an opportunity to clarify his remarks, and the Commission will review the submitted evidence before deciding on any further course of action. This move is seen as an attempt to maintain the integrity of the election process and prevent any disruption based on unsubstantiated claims.

The controversy comes at a sensitive time, with water issues in the region being a matter of significant concern. With the poll season nearing, the Election Commission’s scrutiny of such statements is expected to send a strong message about the need for responsible political discourse.
