New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to distribute over 65 lakh property cards under the SVAMITVA Scheme today, marking a significant milestone in the country’s rural empowerment and governance. The distribution, to be carried out through video conferencing, will span more than 50,000 villages across ten states and two Union Territories. This landmark move aims to bring economic transformation to rural India by offering property owners in village Abadi areas an official Record of Rights.
Launched in 2020, the SVAMITVA Scheme leverages advanced drone technology to survey rural areas and provide households with a Record of Rights for their properties. The initiative is designed to empower rural families by providing legal recognition of their property, which can open doors to economic opportunities such as property monetization and access to institutional credit through bank loans. Furthermore, the scheme seeks to minimize property-related disputes, improve property assessments, and streamline property tax collection in rural regions.
The use of drones in surveying has been instrumental in achieving the scheme’s objectives. So far, over 3.17 lakh villages have been surveyed using drone technology, covering 92% of the targeted areas. More than 2.25 crore property cards have been prepared for over 1.5 lakh villages, providing legal backing to property owners and paving the way for economic prosperity in rural areas.
The success of the SVAMITVA Scheme is evident in its full saturation in several states and Union Territories, including Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Tripura, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Haryana. These regions have already seen comprehensive drone surveys and distribution of property cards. Additionally, drone surveys have been completed in key states such as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, along with several Union Territories, further extending the reach of the scheme across the nation.
Through this initiative, the government aims to create a more formalized property ownership structure in rural areas, helping citizens access financial resources and legal security for their homes and lands. By reducing the prevalence of land-related disputes and enabling better tax collection, the scheme promises to contribute to the long-term economic growth and stability of rural India.
