Delhi, Jan 18, 2025: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal promised on Saturday that his party would extend the current free power and water scheme to tenants in Delhi if AAP retains power after the upcoming assembly elections. This vow comes ahead of the Delhi assembly elections on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8. Kejriwal’s statement aims to address concerns of Delhi’s tenant population, who have been excluded from the benefits of the AAP government’s highly praised utility schemes.
In a bid to further secure votes, Kejriwal outlined several proposals to enhance the welfare of Delhi’s residents, especially women, the elderly, and the working class. In a bid to attract more female voters, the Delhi Chief Minister announced that women would receive a monthly honorarium of ₹2,100. In addition, he reaffirmed the AAP government’s commitment to providing free healthcare for senior citizens, alongside a ₹10 lakh insurance scheme for auto drivers.
The party has also promised to provide Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) with funding to hire private security guards, a move designed to improve local safety and community well-being. Kejriwal assured that these initiatives would be an extension of the already existing programs like revamped government schools, mohalla clinics, and the popular free electricity scheme. These measures form part of AAP’s broader agenda to continue its development-oriented governance in Delhi.
The Delhi assembly election is expected to be a highly competitive three-way contest, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress seeking to unseat AAP, which has been in power in the national capital for the past two terms. The AAP government has been credited with transformative policies aimed at improving public services, including education, health, and utility services. However, the BJP and Congress have been vocal in their opposition to Kejriwal’s leadership and have been campaigning aggressively to challenge AAP’s dominance in Delhi.
On January 17, the last date for filing nominations, political parties set their final strategies for the election. Kejriwal’s comments come amidst rumors of voter manipulation and deletions from the electoral rolls. However, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar dismissed these claims, assuring the public that voter deletions could not take place without proper documentation, field verification, and an opportunity for the affected individuals to be heard. The CEC also emphasized the strict protocols followed to ensure the accuracy and fairness of the voter list.
As the election draws closer, the AAP’s promises, including tenant inclusion in the free utility scheme, have become key talking points in the campaign. The outcome of the February 5 vote will determine whether AAP can continue its governance and deliver on its extensive list of welfare plans for Delhi’s residents.
