Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has amended the rules related to the oath-taking process for newly-elected members

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has amended the rules related to the oath-taking process for newly-elected members of the Lower House, prohibiting them from adding any remarks, including sloganeering, to the oath. The latest amendments include a new clause in the ‘Directions by the Speaker’ to regulate matters not specifically mentioned in the existing rules.

The new clause requires members to make and subscribe to the oath or affirmation strictly in accordance with the form set out in the Third Schedule to the Constitution of India, without using any additional words, expressions, or remarks as a prefix or suffix. This amendment follows recent instances where elected members added remarks during their oath-taking, which were met with objections from several members. The rule aims to ensure a standardized and respectful process for the swearing-in of new MPs.
