The West Bengal government has issued a new directive making the singing of “Vande Mataram” compulsory in morning assemblies across all state-run and government-aided schools. The instruction has come into effect immediately and applies to students of every class.
According to the notification released by the School Education Department, educational institutions have been asked to begin the school day with the national song as part of the regular assembly routine. School authorities and principals have also been directed to ensure that all students actively participate without exception.
Officials stated that the move is aimed at promoting patriotism, discipline, and a sense of national unity among students. The department has further instructed schools to implement the order strictly and submit compliance if required.
The decision has already triggered discussions in political and educational circles, with reactions pouring in from different sections of society. While supporters have welcomed the step as a tribute to national pride, critics are debating the compulsory nature of the directive.
The order is expected to impact thousands of schools and lakhs of students across the state in the coming academic session.
